Hatake-jima Experimental Field, located in Tanabe Bay, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, is composed of Hatake-jima Island and Komaru-jima Islet, which are connected to the former in low tide. Hatake-jima Island was purchased by the national government and designated as the ‘Hatake-jima Experimental Field’ in 1968. The Century of Research Project have formally conducted long-term surveys in the experimental field since 1969.

Approximately 300 meters from north to south, Hatake-jima Island―with its sandy beaches, muddy sand flats, rocky shores, gravel shores, and cliffs―is home to various marine benthic organisms and coastal plants.
